#17) Local Chiropractor goes NUTS!

Type = "html" >
Dr. Doyle if I can't eat cakes, cookies, pies, cream ice, cookies and all the stuff great tasting that made me fat and miserable over the years, what are you eat me?

Now that is an excellent question, I hear all the time from my patients.    One of the great snacks you can enjoy every day would be a small handful of nuts and seeds, still raw.  They are a food excellent source-high protein content and you provide a healthy type of fat that your body needs.  Nuts and seeds, raise our level of good cholesterol and contain vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and essential nutrients.

In 1996, the Iowa women's health study found that women who eat nuts 4 or 5 times a week were 40% less likely to die of heart disease.  The school of Harvard's Pub. Health and Loma Linda University in California found the same thing.  The Physicians Health Study in 2002 determined that men who ate nuts two or more times a week were significantly reducing the risk of sudden death.  The study of Purdue University in Indiana found that when people added 1 to 2 ounces of walnuts per day to their diet, they do not take weight.  Contrary to popular belief.  Another study involving women conducted at Harvard school of Pub. Health reported that there was a 30% reduces the risk of type II diabetes among women who ate 5 or more 1 ounce servings of nuts a week, compared to women rarely or never ate nuts.

Moderation is always key, a typical serving of nuts is 1 ounce and will generally contain between 160 and 200 calories and 13 to 20 g of fat, but remember this is a good fat that our body needs.  I recommend that you avoid peanut which is actually a legume or bean family and is regarded as a starchy food and not in the category santee that are raw nuts and seeds.  Raw sunflower seeds are a concentrate of vitamins and minerals, a portion of an ounce, or 2 tablespoons is a healthy snack.  Pumpkin seeds, just a 1/4 cup, were two times more omega-3 as salmon 4 oz portion. Include the Brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts, pecan nuts, Yes, its ok to go nuts over these healthy natural food choices.  But remember you, moderation of the key, do pig on nuts and seeds, just a snack or throw them in with your salad, so good for you.  Until next time, Dr. Mark Doyle.
